Good Face Gone Bad: Break Up with Make up

Over 80% of American women wear makeup. The cosmetics industry is highly competitive and will (likely remain) profitable, as 98 percent of those women who wear makeup say they have to wear it daily. Sadly, that same percentage of women partakes in unhealthy makeup habits such as daily usage and even wearing expired makeup without washing their face at night. These habits are detrimental to skin health and can eventually cause chronic skin problems.

What’s in your makeup?

Ingredient lists contain important information regarding what your face paint consists of. Many companies, including those who claim their product is “natural”, may use animal derived products. In addition to parabens (which are known carcinogens) and sulfates (which are known as irritants), animal products may also cause allergic reactions.  The “Hood Health Handbook” by Supreme Design Publishing provides a list of common animal ingredients used in cosmetics:

·       Sable Brushes. From the fur of sables (weasel-like mammals). Used to make eye makeup, lipstick, and artists’ brushes. Alternatives: synthetic fibers. Sable Brushes. ·       Carmine. Cochineal. Carminic Acid. Red pigment from the crushed female cochineal insect. Used in cosmetics, shampoos, red applesauce, and other foods (including red lollipops and food coloring). May cause allergic reaction. Alternatives: beet juice (used in powders, rouges, shampoos; no known toxicity).

·       Fish Scales. Used in shimmery makeups. Alternatives: mica, rayon, synthetic pearl.

·       Gelatin. Gel. Protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments, and/or bones with water. From cows and pigs. Used in shampoos, face masks, and other cosmetics. Alternatives: carrageen (carrageenan, Irish moss), seaweeds (algin, agar-agar, kelp–used in jellies, plastics, medicine), pectin from fruits, dextrins.

How to Protect Yourself:

Don’t wear make up everyday.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It requires the ability to breathe and respire (undergo respiration).  Our skin also absorbs over 80 percent of what it comes in contact with.

Over time, preservatives and toxic chemicals in makeup cause skin problems such as dermatitis, eczema, rashes, acne, wrinkles and discoloration. You are definitely “beating your face” by caking on a daily layer of primer, foundation, rouge, bronzer, shadow, mascara, lip liner, lip gloss/lip stick and eye liner.

Side note: Originally, eyeliner was worn to protect our eyes from direct sunlight and smoke.

Don’t wear expired makeup.

Makeup lasts about 6-8 months. Be sure to throw away any unused cosmetics after this time. Expired makeup is the largest home for bacterial growth.

Thoroughly clean your face.

A night at the club or bar shouldn’t prevent you from washing your face before bed. Once asleep, makeup chemicals can seep further into your subcutaneous (fatty, bottom later) and enter your bloodstream. Use a warm towel and water to relieve your skin and refresh your face.

Drink water.

Keep your skin hydrated. Our bodies are 75 percent water and dry skin and lips are an early sign of dehydration. By remaining on top of your water intake, you reduce the need of makeup by naturally combating oil buildup and dryness while nurturing a fresh face!

Put your best face forward. Break up with your makeup when necessary in order to avoid this one sided, abusive relationship.
